Article Marketing Tips – The Spinning Debate

The use of software (known as article spinners) to produce articles is the subject of many hotly contested debates on internet forums. You will find plenty of people publishing article marketing tips advocating the use of spinners. You will find about an equal number who will tell you not to even consider spinning articles for publication.

Article spinners are software programs which claim to have the ability to spin one article into multiple unique articles. The advertising for these products make other extravagant claims regarding ease of use (“with just one click…”), and the amazing benefits their software can provide for your article marketing campaigns.

So, to spin or not to spin? This is how the debate goes:

“Spinning articles avoids Google’s duplicate content penalty.”

<> There is no duplicate content penalty. Many experienced people say so; even Google says so. Get to understand the difference between duplicate content and syndication and stop punishing yourself needlessly.

“Successful article marketing depends upon the wide circulation of as many articles as possible.”

<> Successful article marketing depends upon the wide circulation of as many well-written articles as possible.

“Having lots of articles online will enhance your reputation as an expert in your field.”

<> Spun articles are never as good as the real thing. The worst of them make no sense at all, most of them sound like they were written by a drunk whose first language is not English. The best of them don’t scan as if they were written by a human. Having your name published as the author of a page of gibberish will wreck your credibility.

“Having numerous articles online builds good quality back links which will improve your websites’ ranking in the search engine results.”

<> Circulating hundreds of spun articles might earn you some useful back links but the best quality links will only be earned by the best quality articles.

“If you have one article online based on a particular keyword, you have one chance of getting on Google’s first page. If you have ten articles online using the same keyword, you have the chance to dominate page one of a search in the same term.”

<> Dominating a search engine query with gibberish won’t attract human visitors to your website.

“Article spinning software gets more sophisticated all the time. The old spinners used to rely heavily on synonym replacement; modern spinners go far beyond simple synonym replacement. There are spinners that are able to turn one article into a hundred articles. There are even spinners that will automatically submit your spun articles to hundreds of article directories.”

<> The spinners that give the best results are the ones that require the most human effort. Producing halfway decent articles with a spinner takes more work than writing multiple articles without the software (and it is tedious work). There are much better ways to submit your articles to article directories.

“Article marketing is about using articles as a marketing tool; it is not about writing well. When article spinners can produce articles that pass plagiarism checks, there is no point in using your time and energy in writing numerous articles.”

<> The fact that spun articles can pass online plagiarism checks doesn’t mean that search engines will see them as originals. The ways they read web pages are completely different. Google can see things Copyscape can’t detect.

” The use of article spinners is merely making the best use of current technology.”

<> Beware of technology; if you lean on it too heavily, it will turn round one day and bite you in a tender place. Tricks marketers were using two or three years ago to fool Google no longer work.

The risk attached to article spinning

The greatest danger of reliance on article spinners is that one day you will get found out. You could spend years building an empire based on spun content. You might even make some good money from your websites. One tweak from Google and it could all be gone.

Webmasters talk about getting “Google slapped” when they have been caught out using dubious techniques. Google, Yahoo, and Bing have huge resources; it would be foolish to believe you can outwit them forever.

The spin or not to spin debate will probably keep running until Google delivers a terminal blow to businesses built on mechanically produced content.

Google’s mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”. The words “information” and “useful” simply don’t belong in the same sentence as “spun articles”. The Internet is being flooded with meaningless cloned articles in the name of entrepreneurship; this junk needs to be filtered out.

The best article marketing tips I can add to this debate are:

take care of your name – credibility is hard to gain but easy to lose;
don’t confuse article spinning with writing – Google won’t;
don’t expect mercy when Google finds you guilty of polluting the Internet with “article-vomit”.

If you want to use software to multiply your articles, don’t even think about using an automated article spinner. They don’t deliver what they promise (ie hundreds of unique “real” articles at the push of a button). Choose article rewriting software that gives you control of the end result. This means you have to do more than just pressing one button, but you will be able to produce articles that don’t sound as if they were written by a crazy person. Magic Article Submitter will automatically submit your articles to hundreds of directories and it comes with a built in article rewriter.
